Flatburn: An open-source, low-cost, solar-powered sensing platform designed to monitor urban air quality and heat levels. Air pollution and heat are serious health risks on the rise due to environmental degradation and climate change. Unfortunately, many communities lack the necessary data to address these issues effectively. flatburn seeks to fill this gap by providing easy-to-deploy sensors that can attach to public or personal vehicles, gathering hyperlocal data critical for understanding and managing these challenges. With its open-source design, flatburn allows citizen scientists to customize the data they collect, putting the power of information into the hands of communities. This low-cost, high-impact solution offers a practical and scalable way to address environmental issues.
Underworld: A new sampling device to be used at manholes in multiple locations. The device is called Koopa, the device has unique characteristics suitable for multiple, timed, and multi-location sampling, it can be scheduled to collect morning and evening sampling at the same manhole without the need for an operator running the sampling the whole time. Koopa has a lower cost than commercially available samplers, is small to be fitted in manholes, can be operated via an app, and has sampling bottles that can be switched on site, without the need of bringing the whole device to the lab.
